Charlemagne Prize Academy Report 2021 – on the Future of the Union
Report
The Charlemagne Prize Academy's Annual Report 2021 presents an overview on the supported research projects within the research year 2020/21, connected with voices from European descision-makers and experts.
In this report, we have focused on different approaches to deepen European solidarity, where the incisions of the pandemic may serve as crossroads from which moving forward together seems inevitable. We have addressed internal efforts for greater cohesion, but also Europe's responsibility beyond its own borders, be it with regard to the migration issue, its own sovereignty in the area of digitalisation or foreign and security policy, but also the more effective design of European trade routes – all aspects that have come to the fore in the wake of the crisis. In this way, various components of European solidarity as well as the conception of a unified understanding of solidarity itself are thematised and are intended to stimulate reflection. Within the framework of the Charlemagne Prize Academy, we aim to propose possible solutions to current and future challenges, before and while they appear in public discourse, and create an information base for the topics of today and tomorrow.
The activities of the Academy are supported by the Federal Foreign Office, the King Baudouin Foundation, schwartz GmbH and the State Government of North Rhine-Westphalia.
