Working Paper: EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 – The State of Play
This is the first milestone report of the 2023/24 Charlemagne Prize Academy Fellowship by Dr. Verónica Relaño, in which she assesses the state of play of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.
Her research question:
How Can the EU Reach Its Objective to Legally Protect 30% of European Seas by 2030?
In light of the challenges and delays presented in the first working paper, the work conducted during the Charlemagne Prize Fellowship serves as a critical link between the EU's biodiversity objectives and the actualization of Member State commitments. The Fellowship's analytical efforts will not only identify and bridge gaps in the submission process but will also support Member States and the European Commission in understanding and overcoming the barriers to effective pledge implementation. This facilitation is essential to foster a collaborative environment that encourages timely action and shared responsibility. By providing a detailed analysis of current progress and offering strategic recommendations, the fellowship aims to galvanize political will and optimize resource allocation, ultimately contributing to the realization of the EU Biodiversity Strategy's goals for 2030.
